From The Archive: My Top 3 Go-To Mix Plugins
Keeping the tracks sounding smooth
Over the years, I’ve tested countless plugins, but these three remain my go-to tools for mixing and mastering. Whether I’m shaping EQ, controlling dynamics, or balancing vocals, these plugins consistently deliver with ease.
1. FabFilter Pro-Q 3 (Now Pro-Q 4 Available)
I started using FabFilter Pro-Q years ago, and it quickly became the one plugin I use on almost every track—from individual instruments to the master bus and even in mastering. Its transparent sound and intuitive visual interface make EQing a breeze.
Top Features:
Dynamic EQ Nodes – Perfect for sculpting the low end, helping the kick and bass sit together without clashing.
Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer – Instantly highlights problem areas in your frequency spectrum, making it easier to find and fix issues.
Ultra-Transparent Processing – No unwanted color; just clean, precise EQing.
BIG PRO: The dynamic EQ is a game-changer, allowing for targeted frequency control only when needed, keeping the mix clean and natural.
2. FabFilter Pro-L2 (Limiter)

This transparent yet powerful limiter is my go-to for finalizing mixes and ensuring loudness without sacrificing dynamics. Whether I’m mastering a track or controlling peaks in a mix, Pro-L2 delivers clean, precise results.
Top Features:
True Peak Limiting – Prevents intersample clipping for a clean, distortion-free master.
Style Options – Multiple limiting algorithms to suit different genres and mix styles.
Real-Time Loudness Metering – Helps hit optimal loudness levels while keeping dynamics intact.
3. Waves Renaissance Vox (R-Vox)
A simple but powerful vocal compressor that evens out dynamics without the pumping effect of traditional compression. I use this not just for vocals but also for bass, guitars, and percussion.
Top Features:
One-Knob Compression – Dial in the right balance without over-squashing your track.
Great for Vocals & Instruments – Smooths out volume inconsistencies while keeping energy intact.
Intelligent Gain Reduction – Preserves transients while maintaining a natural feel.
Over time, we all build a shortlist of must-have plugins. What are some of yours? Drop a few in the comments.
